Featured Staff Member Ian P.

Ian P. is one of our most interesting staff members at the Hotel. He is extremely artistic beside being a wonderful Bartender/Server.

Ian is in a band and plays the guitar he also writes incredible poetry. His band is called IJP and some of his poetry can be read in this post. How appropriate that the entries below have a little something to do with Detroit?

 Hockey time in Hockey

A Trip to the Detroit Zoo!

Our Sales and Marketing Manager, Jana Urban had a fun-filled weekend at the Detroit Zoo!

Read on about her trip and take a look at her photos!

It was Zoopendous!

The Detroit Zoo was absolutely wonderful! There were so many educational exhibits, fun activities and animals to see!

The Detroit Zoo is Home to more than 3,300 animals of 280 species. Among my favorites were the Camels, Seals and Lions! I also really enjoyed taking Tauber Family Railroad which goes through the entire zoo as well as the Giraffe Feeding. It was such a blast and I learned so many wonderful facts!

Did you know that the Poison Dart Frog is one of the most toxic animals on Earth?  The two-inch-long (five-centimeter-long) Golden Poison Dart Frog has enough venom to kill 10 grown men. Tiny but, deadly!

Also, The Female Peacock is not brightly colored those gorgeous creatures are actually the males!

There were some surprising elements as well. THE FOOD WAS FANTASTIC!  There were several cafe’s that served delicious food such as flatbread sandwiches and healthy, hearty Salads. Some cafe’s also sold some cocktails and draft beers. So adults, if you are not the designated driver and need to show some kids a good time,  it is truly a fun time even if animal watching isn’t your thing!

Arctic Café
This cafeteria-style restaurant is the only one of its kind across the country in a zoo or aquarium setting that is Green Certified by the Green Restaurant Association. The Café earned distinction for its eco-friendly practices which include cutlery made from potato starch and soybean oil, touchless sensor faucets, increased recycling options, and a programmable thermostat. As the main feeding station, this location offers an expanded menu including deli salads and sandwiches, traditional grill favorites, pizza and vegetarian options.

Safari Grill
Similar to the Arctic Café, this concession stand offers traditional fare including burgers, chicken tenders, french fries, and fresh-made chips. For dessert, grab an iced-cold Icee or an ice cream cone! Safari Grill is located in the back of the Zoo across from the Tauber Family Railroad Station.

American Coney Island
A favorite with native Detroiters and visitors alike, the famous American Coney Island hot dog is now available at the Detroit Zoo! Located across from Rackham Fountain The cafe serves coney favorites include chili cheese fries, gyro’s, and greek salads.

Kijiji Cafe
This location specializes in East Coast favorites like the Philly cheese steak and buffalo chicken tenders. Located across from Rackham Fountain next to the Ford Education Center.

Sweet Treats
Cool down and satisfy your sweet tooth at this location with ice cream, Icee’s, and Sno Cones. Fried favorites such as elephant ears and funnel cakes are also available at this stand, located across from the bear dens at the west end of the Arctic Ring of Life.

Be prepared to do a lot of walking! Good news is that The Tauber Family Railroad can take you through the zoo, but only 1 way. So you can either walk through the zoo and take it back or take it through the whole zoo and walk your way back to your exit! Think of it as your daily exercise…

 Some other perks:

There is a 3D Theatre, Wild Adventure Rides and a gorgeous Carousel right in the middle of the park.

There is really something about the zoo that makes you feel like a kid again!  I  learned so many amazing facts and saw some wonderful sights. I had a blast and would return in a heartbeat!

Please contact me directly and mention THE DETROIT ZOO for a discounted room  rental rate!

From New York to Michigan: Jana Urban

We would like to introduce our Sales and Marketing Manager Ms. Jana Urban (pictured above). She is a New Yorker who had moved to Michigan this past March of 2012.

Michigan’s New Addition-

My name is Jana Urban and I am the Sales and Marketing Manager here at the Hilton Garden Inn Detroit Southfield. I love my position here and really enjoy working at a Hilton Property. New York is my hometown and I have been living in Michigan since March 2012, a recent addition! The common question that I get asked is “Why would you move to Michigan from New York City”? And my answer is for love. My boyfriend works for General Motors and he was promoted which included a move to the Detroit Area. There was no question in my mind, I was going with him. So, here I am all settled in and happy!

I have been in hospitality since 2006, working in many different fields including Travel and Event Planning for a small independently owned business as well as Group Coordination for large conventions and exhibitions. I have planned travel and events all over the city of New York and eventually started traveling all over the USA in my Group Coordinator position. Working for the Hilton Garden Inn Southfield is great. I am strictly the Sales and Marketing Manager for the one property; planning events in one place. I have made the necessary adjustments and I continue to learn more each day. I think that knowing all of the dimensions of this business will absolutely benefit my career in the future.

Since working for the Hilton Garden Inn Detroit Southfield Hotel I am most proud of starting the social media marketing plans for the property. We have finally entered the Twitter, Blog and Facebook world. I just leaped right into posting facts and descriptions of what I believe make this Hotel great and so far it has been quite a success. It is a great feeling to know that we are getting our voice out there. I feel excited about it! Every follower and fan is important. Every comment and visit is appreciated. We have a long way to go but we finally launched and it feels fantastic!

At the new Hilton Garden Inn Detroit Southfield hotel in Southfield, Michigan guests will find everything they need, including deluxe accommodations, friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere. We specialize in hosting events large and small from corporate meetings to lavish weddings.

Please contact our Sales and Marketing Manager Ms. Jana Urban for further information.

Charita’s Journey with HGI Southfield

Ms.Image Charita A. Martin has worked at the Hilton Garden Inn Detroit Southfield since January 2007. Her Last day as the Front Desk Manager is TODAY June 13th, 2012. She will be greatly missed. We wish her the best of luck and thank her for her hard work since day 1!

Charita’s Journey-

I have worked for the Hilton Garden Inn Southfield for the past 5 years. My Journey here started out in January 2007 as a Customer Service/Front Desk Agent. I then became the Sales Manager in 2009 and worked my way to the Front Desk Manager in 2010 through… Today! As the Front Desk Manager I was responsible for managing all front desk and night audit operations. I was to make sure they were run smoothly all the while maintaining a wonderful rapport with my staff and guests. I worked with all departments of the hotel to ensure total guest satisfaction. In addition to my responsibilities some of my favorite things about working here were my co-workers and of course the guests! I will never forget the guests, they can make or break your day! I “always”  kept it together no matter the situation. From late check-out’s to crazy requests, I will miss my loyal customers and their friendly faces. The hotel employees, my fellow co-workers were the best part of working at the Hilton Garden Inn Southfield. Every job can get stressful at times but, no matter the ups, downs and stressful situations my coworkers were truly a joy to be around. Every one of them over the years were fantastic: General Managers, Accountants, Directors, Managers, Supervisors, Agents, Waitresses, Waiters, Bartenders, Housekeepers, Housemen, Dishwashers, Maintenance and Banquet Staff were hardworking, wonderful people to be around. I also enjoyed the many events including luncheons, weddings, family reunions and other functions that the hotel has hosted in the past. Overall, this was an experience and career achievement that I will cherish forever! I will sincerely miss you guys.
